You have to get in touch with every single bureau and request a freeze - certainly, there is a charge. Their website sites have particulars.

When I looked, it cost $ 10 per event (freeze, unfreeze, or one-time-unfreeze).
Each agency’s website provides details.
if your main concern is identitity theft then you dont have to freeze it. all you have to do is call one of the companies and ask to put an alert on your account. an alert will notifiy any company that is trying to offer credit to someone claiming to be you that extra efforts need to be made to insure that it is you. its free so you should try it.
As of Nov. 1, all states allow credit freezes. Here’s an article that tells you how to go about doing it. It also tells the difference between a credit freeze and a fraud alert.

You have to contact each bureau.
But keep in mind, that identity theft is not just about credit.
There are so many things you need to do to protect yourself that you don’t have time to deal with them all. On average, victims of identity theft spend 40 hours cleaning up the mess that someone else created.
You have 5 identities that need protecting: Your Character ID, Drivers License ID, Financial ID, Social Security ID, and your Medical ID.
You need just 3 things in place to protect yourself. Access to an attorney (24hrs), your credit reports monitored and a company that provides identity restoration services.
